The Setting
Lauriston Farm, near Maldon, us a 210 acre nature friendly biodynamic/organic farm with cattle, sheep, chickens, bee hives and vegetable growing. We are a small team providing work experience, training, support and employment for people with learning disabilities and/or autism in all aspects of the farm work. We are community owned, give farm walks and host primary schools.
Eligibility:
Must want to achieve paid work as the goal & the ability to accept paid employment if offered
Supported Internship Programme
Supported internships are a structured, work-based study programme. Supported interns (job seekers) are enrolled and supported by a school or college but spend most of their learning time - typically around 70% - in a workplace. The Job seeker will gain experience in a working environment and develop the skills they need to move into paid employment. The job seeker will take part in all aspects of the programme, including any training required by the employer. The academic part of the programme may include Maths, English, and relevant work-based units. Academic learning will take place at the farm.
The job seeker will be supported by a job coach throughout the placement using training in systematic instruction to learn new tasks/skills in the job role. Job coaches will use the learn, train & fade model to grow the job seekers resilience, confidence, and independence.
Academic learning is planned and assessed by a college tutor who will visit the farm regularly to meet with the intern and job coach.
The supported internship program will support job seekers to gain paid employment as their primary goal. The supported internship should contribute to the long-term career goals of the young person and match their capabilities.
Please be aware that the farm is in a rural area and consideration will need to be made regarding transport to and from the farm. Interns will be working outside in all weathers throughout the supported internship and will require adequate clothing and footwear.
Placements may include:
Horticulture
Animal Husbandery
Gardening
Farm maintenance
Land based skills
Employability
Vocational Profiling
Vocational profiling is a person-centred tool and therefore must be completed with the individual.
There are many industries to work in, using vocational profiling will identify the job seeker to the right area of work that meets their aspirations. This is called job matching. It is important that the job seeker wants to work and is matched to the right environment. Vocational profiling will recognise any reasonable adjustments and support needs that may be required for the job seeker.
Job Seeker Agreement
Job seekers and their parent/carer will be expected to sign an agreement. This will ensure that all parties are aware of their roles and responsibilities. This agreement will be binding to all concerned and if broken will be revisited for review. The agreement will be explained in full details to the job seeker & parent/carer.
