Social Farming Day Placements

Adults with a learning disability are given the opportunity to co-work alongside our experienced farm team in a safe, supportive and tranquil environment. At Lauriston we know the value of meaningful work and over time, new skills can be learned which contribute directly to the farm's daily work so, as a co-worker, you will become part of the whole farm team comprising staff, volunteers and co-workers.

We currently offer general farm days which include animal care, horticulture, cookery, crafts, sales and conservation. Each day is hosted by two of our staff and can take up to seven co-workers. You begin at 10 a.m. with a gathering and short introduction to the day's workshop. Once everyone has appropriate footwear, clothing and tools for the tasks ahead you head off into the garden, field, craft room or barn. At 11.30 it's tea break and then you continue co-working until lunch which is at 1.00 p.m. After lunch you take a walk to see another part of the farm - maybe new born calves, fruits or flowers in season, the estuary at high tide - before you resume the workshop until afternoon tea at 3.30 p.m. where we review the day. The co-working day ends at 4 p.m.
Each week the workshops naturally move on with the seasons creating new experiences and new learning. The joy and satisfaction of following the seed on its journey to becoming a plant, giving a flower and then a fruit or the ewe being cared for, meeting the ram and then delivering a new born lamb is greatly valued by all of us at Lauriston. The co-worker's year moves slowly, week by week, enabling the grasping of skills before the next skill is needed and this gentle rhythm can provide nourishment and a sense of well being to all those working with it.
The farm is open every week except for two weeks at Christmas, one week at Easter and one week in August.
The cost of each day is £90.
